Navarra ha since the start 2009 received attention for its irresistible energy and its genuinely original relationship with nordic traditional music. The first album, Nya Fönster ("New Windows") was nominated for the Manifestpriset award for Folk Music Album of the Year, as well as the Newcomer of the Year award at the Folk and World Music Gala of 2012. Reviewers described Nya Fönster as "one of the years most interesting albums" and wrote that "Navarra wants to, and succeeds in opening new windows into folk music". The music is both complex and simple, racy and tender, and the newly written lyrics has had many listeners finding their way into a genre where traditional lyrics often seem strange.
The project began in Gothenburg with Arvid's and Sofia's ambition to write music together. The inspiration came from various sources, but mainly within traditional Nordic music. Lyrics were to be in Swedish. After a couple of experiments with band composition everything fell into place when Erika and Calle joined the band, and Navarra took its present form. The band quickly became noted for its live shows, and has played at most of the major scenes for folk music in Sweden and Norway.
